On the one hand, the Greenland Business Association (GE), which is organizing the Future Greenland conference, is pleased with the great interest in the conference, but on the other hand, they are also concerned about whether Trump's special envoy to Greenland, Jeff Landry, is running away with all the attention.
– With the history of the past three months regarding the takeover and military use of Greenland, many will probably think, misunderstood, that this type of visit would be good news for Greenland, says Christian Keldsen, who points out that Greenland Business has not invited Landry and that he is not part of the official program either. But that it is an open conference where everyone has been able to register.
– We have spent two years on this program, and we have several prominent and exciting names involved, so I would of course be sad if all of that fades into the background because of Landry's visit. At the same time, I would like to emphasize that we have a good collaboration with both the American consulate in Nuuk and the embassy in Copenhagen, says Christian Keldsen.
Information and knowledge sharing
Jeff Landry, who is the governor of the state of Louisiana, was appointed as the US special envoy to Greenland by Donald Trump in December. Jeff Landry has not yet been to Greenland, but has spoken out about Greenland several times, including that it is an honor to serve under Trump to make Greenland part of the United States. Most recently, Jeff Landry wrote on the social media X "Shame on you, Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen", after the Greenland Government had rejected the offer to receive an American hospital ship.
According to Christian Keldsen, Jeff Landry's upcoming visit to Nuuk can hopefully help to inform Jeff Landry and the MAGA movement in the US about how Greenlandic society actually works.
– It may be very healthy for him to come to Nuuk and experience how well-functioning a welfare society we have in Greenland, and that we actually have a healthcare system that is accessible to everyone. In addition, there is a very active business community, and that Greenland itself is also responsible for a large number of areas of responsibility, and we have therefore been the master of our own house in much of the development in recent years, says Christian Keldsen.
In addition to Jeff Landry, the US ambassador to Denmark Ken Howery is also on the list of participants, as well as Consul Susan Wilson from the US Consulate in Nuuk.
