On Saturday, there will be demonstrations in major Danish cities against the American statements and ambitions to annex Greenland. Behind the demonstrations are the Inuit Association, the National Organization Uagut and the Inter-Cultural Cooperation.
- Demonstrations are tentatively planned for Saturday at 12 noon in Copenhagen, Aarhus and Aalborg - and we expect that Odense and several other cities will also join, says Camilla Siezing, chairman of the Inuit Association, which is an umbrella organization for 20 Greenlandic associations in Denmark.
- Normally we don't get involved in political issues, but as the situation is now, it will affect Greenlandic background, identity and culture. We find it difficult to be reserved about that.
- We have therefore decided to join the demonstration to support our compatriots in Greenland. We demand respect for the Danish Commonwealth and for Greenland's right to self-determination.
Peaceful demonstrations
- We hope that many people will join in the demonstration - but we also think it is important that it is held peacefully and aims to send a clear signal of respect, sovereignty and equality, explains Camilla Siezing
- The interest in the demonstrations is enormous – and my phone has been practically non-stop since we announced it on Monday evening. It is both people who want to participate and support – and here during Tuesday there have also been many calls from foreign journalists.
In Copenhagen, the demonstration begins at Rådhuspladsen – and then the participants will walk towards the American embassy on Østerbro.
In Aarhus, the demonstration will begin in the square in front of Aarhus Central Station. From here, the demonstrators will walk along Nørregade towards Aarhus Cathedral.
As in the other cities, the demonstration in Aalborg will begin at 12 noon. It will take place at Nytorv, but the further route from here has not yet been determined.
Camilla Siezing encourages everyone interested to follow the developments on the Inuit Community Association's Facebook profile.
