You know. I know. It's tough enough being in the eye of the storm so intensely two years in a row.
Cynics will say: He's just playing, him Trump. But the fact is, he's not. He's unscrupulous. His ego is bigger than the moon.
That is precisely why it is my highest wish – that in this serious situation we are being exposed to – we should make ourselves mentally strong. Stand together and support our Greenlandic Government, and not let fear control this ugly situation.
You ask over and over again how he can get his government to go along with his crazy and in this context imperialist ideas. It's like watching a hardcore gang leader. He has gathered his loyal gang members around him, who do exactly what he orders them to do because they know the consequences of disobedience. The gang members don't wear leather vests with back patches, but red caps with forehead patches.
As we all know, it is not international agreements, ethics, or morality that determine America's actions in these times. It is only about Trump's opinions - whatever the cost.
The valuable work
This means that it is of great value that Greenland and Denmark are doing a great job of uniting the world, including European countries and American politicians, against Trump's desire to take over Greenland.
It is extremely important that Trump and co. do not succeed in separating us, regardless of whether “us” are different parts of the Greenlandic population or Greenland and Denmark. And therefore Naleraq’s and other politicians’ incessant attempts to do just that – to divide us – are completely irresponsible.
Ok, we have every reason to demand a greater degree of equality and inclusion, and yes, there are an unbearable number of voices among Danish opinion leaders who contribute to the division because they still fundamentally believe that Greenland is subject to Denmark. I have heard interviews with Danish politicians who openly tell the world on American TV that “Greenland belongs to Denmark”. It is outdated and unacceptable and we do not want it.
We need the Danish political elite, which also includes parties that may come to power after an election, to understand this. There will come a time when it will be necessary to take a position on a system that will create real equality. But that discussion must wait until better times, and not now!
If the US interest in Greenland has shown us anything, it is that we as a people and society have enormous value. When Trump constantly shouts “We need Greenland!” over an infernal noise from jet engines, it is not because he has just flown over the country. It is because his advisors have told him that the US cannot be defended without Greenland. This fact is so valuable that the Americans are considering engaging with the rest of the world and investing unimaginable sums in taking over the country and establishing themselves here.
No thanks
We are not talking about paying for the free access that the Americans have been granted through the agreements that have long been concluded between the USA, Greenland and Denmark. One could, with every possible reason, start by asking: “Have you said thank you even once?”
So, dear compatriots, m/k, who represent us as a people in meetings and negotiations, stand tall and act with self-confidence and dignity in the encounter with both the USA and Denmark. There is no need to discuss “who should go first” in this situation. We must behave as equals and preferably not always come trailing behind with our petty demands. It is beneath our dignity.
We must present our demands in the forums where it is relevant, and in relation to demands towards the Danes, these forums are currently internal.
Ultimately, we will not be able to prevent an American invasion if such an invasion were to occur, contrary to all common sense. But we have so much to gain by maintaining an equal unity – with Denmark, with Europe, with “the rest of the US”, with the world.
