On Friday and Saturday, the Chairman of the Government of Greenland, Jens-Frederik Nielsen (D), participated in the international security conference in Munich, where he met with, among other things, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio together with Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen.
On Sunday, Jens-Frederik Nielsen made a statement on Facebook about his messages at the conference, where he made it clear, among other things, that it is unacceptable to threaten other countries' territories:
- If we start to accept that mindset, we open the door to a world where great powers share influence among themselves without respect for small nations and their right to self-determination. This is not the world order we want, writes Jens-Frederik Nielsen.
- Ally put pressure on our country
He further points out that it is not China or Russia that has created insecurity in Greenland but instead an ally:
- From a Greenlandic perspective, we have lived in low tension for many years. We have not felt threatened by Russia or China.
- The first time many Greenlanders really experienced a feeling of insecurity was when an ally put pressure on our country, which created doubts about our future, writes Jens-Frederik Nielsen, referring here to the United States, where President Donald Trump has repeatedly stated that the United States should take over Greenland.
Jens-Frederik Nielsen emphasizes that decisions about Greenland are made in Greenland, and that Greenland is helping to take greater responsibility for security in the region.
Donald Trump has repeatedly criticized the security of Greenland and said that Greenland is surrounded by Chinese and Russian ships. The claim has been rejected by Greenland and Denmark, but several initiatives have been launched to strengthen the defense in Greenland.
