Another avalanche accident outside Nuuk

A rescue operation has been launched in the hinterland of Nuuk on Saturday afternoon. An unknown number – but probably four people – have been hit by a snow avalanche, the Greenland Police confirms.

A major avalanche accident was reported at 3:45 PM on Saturday afternoon. This was confirmed by the Greenland Police Chief, Karsten Højrup Kristensen, to Sermitsiaq.

- It is still unknown how many people are involved, but the first reports are that there are probably four people buried in an avalanche accident, says the Chief, Karsten Højrup Kristensen, to Sermitsiaq.

He further states that a SAR operation has been launched, where the Arctic Command and the police are working together.

- A helicopter has also been deployed. The rescue operation is still ongoing, and we are still in an urgent phase of operations. "Therefore, I cannot comment further," he says.
