2026 GENERAL ELECTIONS

Aqqalu C. Jerimiassen: We prefer Troels Lund Poulsen as minister, but...

No parties in Greenland have yet indicated a preferred prime minister in Denmark. Atassut, however, prefers the leader of the Liberal Party, Troels Lund Poulsen, but may also support another candidate.

Aqqalu Jerimiassen says he is satisfied with the results of the Liberal Party's participation in the Danish government in recent years.

Atassut is currently running three candidates for the Folketing: Malu Ostermann, Bentiaraq Ottosen and Orla Joelsen. If one of them is elected, the party's first choice for prime minister is already clear.

- Because we cooperate with the Liberal Party, Troels Lund Poulsen will be our first choice, says Atassut's leader, Aqqalu C. Jerimiassen.

However, the party will not refuse to cooperate with others in advance.

- Considering what is best for our country, we will not exclude the Reds from the start if they end up in power. We will look at which areas we can collaborate on.

However, there is one party that Atassut has already ruled out.

- We will never choose Morten Messerschmidt. We cannot imagine collaborating with the Danish People's Party, says Aqqalu C. Jerimiassen.

Can easily point to Mette Frederiksen

The three parties in Denmark – the Social Democrats, the Liberals and the Moderates – have formed governments in recent years.

- If Mette Frederiksen wants to form a similar government again, she can expect to get support, says Aqqalu C. Jerimiassen.

He emphasizes that Greenland always gets the most out of it when the Liberals are in government.

- We can clearly see the difference between Mette Frederiksen and Helle Thorning-Schmidt. Helle Thorning-Schmidt had a government with the SF, while Mette Frederiksen's centrist government has achieved much more for Greenland because she cooperates with more friendly and cooperative partners, he says.

Airport in Qeqertarsuaq

There are 179 members in the Folketing, and when there is a fight for the majority in the government formation, the two members from Greenland can play an important role. If Atassut gets a member in the Folketing and must secure the majority, they have demands.

- Atassut's goal since it was founded in 1978 of equal conditions under the realm, which is now something all parties strive for, we will continue without change.

When it comes to concrete demands, the chairman of Atassut has an example. Last year, it was decided that Denmark should invest in a new airport in Ittoqqortoormiit and a new deep-water port in Qaqortoq. If they get a majority for a future prime minister, they will make similar demands.

- For example, some areas in Disko Bay may not have an airport, such as in Qeqertarsuaq. I am thinking of them, among other things, when it comes to investments in obtaining such facilities, says Aqqalu C. Jerimiassen.

- Atassut's goal since its founding in 1978 has been equal conditions under the Commonwealth, which is now something all parties strive for, we will continue without changes.

- Some areas in Disko Bay still lack airports, such as in Qeqertarsuaq. These are among the places we are thinking about when prioritizing investments, he says.
