Editor-in-chief after political unrest: Marking has developed into an own goal of caliber

Siumut wanted to make a political mark by withdrawing from the coalition, but it has developed into an own goal, the editor-in-chief assesses.

Siumut made a strong political mark when the party slammed the door on Friday and left the coalition.

However, that mark has turned into a political own goal of great magnitude after the two prominent and long-standing Siumut members, Vivian Motzfeldt and Kim Kielsen, both chose to resign from Siumut on Tuesday.

This is what editor-in-chief of Sermitsiaq, Masaana Egede, assesses:

- It seems as if Siumut's leadership has been waiting for an opportunity to break with the coalition and make a mark, especially towards their own voters and to strengthen their position with their own, says Masaana Egede and continues:

- But overall it seems like a major self-defeat, because they are not only weakening their influence, but they are also losing two very high-profile figures who have helped shape Siumut and the party's policy for many years.

Sticks to small markings from Siumut

On Tuesday, first Vivian Motzfeldt and later on the day Kim Kielsen left Siumut, and both gave identical reasons in the form of that they strongly disagree with leaving the coalition with the current reasons from the party's executive board.

Party chairwoman Aleqa Hammond has justified Siumut's exit by saying that the party cannot see itself in a coalition where two members of the Government of Greenland are running in the general election.

Editor-in-chief Masaana Egede assesses that from the start of the coalition period there have been signs that Siumut's participation in the coalition was uncertain, and that this has been increasing after the party got a new chairman in the form of Aleqa Hammond last summer:

- When the coalition was formed, it already seemed a little uncertain, and we saw small cracks and markings from Siumut, but it seemed as if they found that there was a greater purpose in being in the coalition, says Masaana Egede and continues:

- Since then there has been a change of chairman in the party, and the new chairman may have been waiting for an opportunity, and here they took it on a basis that neither their political opponents nor now two prominent members see as enough to break a coalition.

Jens-Frederik faces a challenge

Naalakkersuisut Chairman Jens-Frederik Nielsen (D) will now start to figure out what Naalakkersuisut should look like going forward:

- He faces a big challenge, because regardless of what's up and down at Siumut, Naalakkersuisut is now down to seven members, and they started with 10.

- His task now will be to show that he can put together a team that can last an election period, says Masaana Egede.

After Kim Kielsen and Vivian Motzfeldt have left Siumut, the party is about to have its mandates in Inatsisartut halved from four to two.
