A story from a Nuuk resident is currently being shared widely on Facebook.
The resident tells how a man, Cliff, allegedly from Los Angeles, offered him $200,000 if he would sign a document stating that Greenland could become part of the USA.
The resident rejected the offer and has reportedly reported the matter to the police.
Another resident, Villy Olsvig, tells Sermitsiaq that he also met this “Cliff” in Nuuk on Wednesday.
Villy Olsvig is on a short stay in Nuuk these days and met the alleged American man at Katuaq.
Citizen: Very strange
The man asked for help in finding HHE, and Villy Olsvig helped walk with him. But suddenly the man made an offer:
- As I can see, he has a stack of papers, forms that you have to fill out to cast a kind of vote. The man informed me that if I said yes to the offer, I would receive 200,000 dollars by January of next year.
The man had also stated that the rest of his family would also receive a certain amount, and it was tax-free money. Villy Olsvig is, however, very skeptical about the offer:
- But I am very skeptical. There is nothing about where his money would come from and where we would receive the money from. It is very strange, says Villy Olsvig.
Police will not comment
Sermitsiaq has contacted the Greenland Police. The chief of police would neither confirm nor deny a report but said he could not comment and instead referred to the police press service.
Sermitsiaq has contacted the press service but has not yet received a response.
It is important to emphasize that it is unknown to Sermitsiaq who this Cliff may be working for, whether he is a private activist or something completely different.
At Sermitsiaq we will continue to try to get a comment from the police on the case. We are also trying to get a comment from the American authorities regarding whether they are aware of the man's activities in Nuuk.
