It is more important than ever to have close allies who will come when needed.
This is what Mette Frederiksen (S) says in connection with the EU summit in Brussels, and after DR has carried a story that Denmark and a number of other countries were prepared for the worst when the conflict over Greenland escalated in early 2026.
- When the threats accelerated in January, there was a rapid reaction from the major European countries. The rest of Europe backed up, and so did a new partner like Canada.
- In today's world, we can never stand alone and turn our backs on others. Therefore, we must also be one of the countries that takes the lead, so that we can enjoy the support of other countries when we are placed in a difficult situation, she says.
According to DR, Danish and foreign soldiers were prepared for the situation in Greenland to develop into more than diplomacy, when the American desire to control the country flared up once again in January.
This is according to information from unnamed sources in key positions in, among others, the government and allied European countries.
The soldiers were part of a larger force with soldiers from, among others, France, Germany, Norway and Sweden, who were sent to Greenland - allegedly to participate in the "Arctic Endurance" exercise.
However, DR has been informed that the deployed Danish soldiers had bags of blood and explosives with them when they traveled to Greenland.
Normally, one would never bring blood if it were just an exercise, and the explosives were supposedly to be used to destroy runways and make a possible American invasion more difficult.
- The cost to the US was to be increased. The US was to carry out a hostile act to get Greenland, a source in the defense tells DR about the background to the mission.
