Greenland Airports has now announced the specific date for the opening of the new Atlantic airport in Ilulissat. The company itself states this:

– We have now reached such a stage in the project that we can confirm that Ilulissat Airport will open on October 29, as planned. This is a significant milestone that both marks the opening of a new international airport and completes the overall construction program for the three new airports in Nuuk, Qaqortoq and Ilulissat, says Greenland Airports' CEO, Jens Lauridsen.

The current status is that the terminal building and runway have been handed over, and the next step is the handover of the garage and installation of technical equipment.

– It is not just about installations and tests, but to a large extent about getting people, technology and workflows in place. This is where the foundation for operations is laid, and our focus is now on ensuring that the airport is ready to welcome passengers and staff in the best possible way, says Jens Lauridsen.

Weekly flights at the beginning

The opening date was expected in advance, when Air Greenland announced its traffic planning. Until now, the announcements from Greenland Airports have been an opening sometime in October. Now the date is official.

– With the opening of Ilulissat, we are completing a historic construction program with three new airports in Greenland. It has been a demanding and valuable journey, which we now look forward to completing, says Jens Lauridsen.

Air Greenland states that the new Ilulissat-Copenhagen route will start with flights every Wednesday. It will increase to two weekly departures around Christmas and again in March.
