High-tension situation can increase Greenland's resilience

The massive pressure from the US against Greenland has created geopolitical attention that can create value in this country, writes the Bank of Greenland in an analysis.

The geopolitical attention, when implemented wisely, can become an important supplement to Greenland's own economic and social development, according to an analysis from the Bank of Greenland.

In its annual report for 2025, the Bank of Greenland has dedicated a section that focuses on the value of geopolitical investments based on the massive pressure from the US against Greenland, which has led to "uncertainty, bordering on fear and which has shaken large parts of the population".

However, the new situation that Greenland is in is not only negative. There are also advantages if you look at the developments over the past year with socio-economic lenses.

Security policy tensions

- International interest is driven by Greenland's strategic location, security policy significance and access to critical resources. The development has also underlined that geopolitics is not only about investments and cooperation, but also about serious security tensions with Greenland's geographical location as a central element, the analysis states, adding that the course of events in 2025 "has given rise to a number of concrete agreements and investments of importance to Greenlandic society and economy".

The bank specifically notes that the cooperation with Denmark in 2025 has resulted in decisions and investments within defence, preparedness and infrastructure:

- Expansion of military and organisational capacities, including new facilities and structures, creates local activity and jobs and at the same time offers opportunities for dual use, where investments can also support civilian purposes such as preparedness, transport and search and rescue capacity.

Strategic partners

What the bank also points out is that the EU and its member states have increasingly positioned themselves as a strategic partner from which the country can benefit.

- The EU's engagement is aimed, among other things, at raw materials, infrastructure and knowledge building and can contribute to reducing risks in projects that would otherwise be difficult to realise under Greenlandic conditions. This form of geopolitical engagement can act as a catalyst for investments, where the value is not only measured in exports or revenues, but also in strengthened capacity and institutional robustness, the analysis states.

Positive effects

It is pointed out that the socioeconomic value of the individual investment projects can have lasting and positive effects.

- Improved preparedness, stronger search and rescue capacity, increased accessibility and more stable infrastructure have concrete implications for citizens, businesses and local communities. At the same time, geopolitical engagement can contribute to mitigating structural challenges, it says.

The Bank of Greenland therefore believes that “Greenland’s geopolitical position holds potential for creating socio-economic and citizen-friendly value”.

The potential

- The potential is not, however, realized automatically, but requires that investments be considered in conjunction with society's long-term needs for skills, labor supply and welfare. Seen in that context, geopolitical attention, when implemented wisely, can become an important supplement to Greenland's own economic and social development, is the uplifting conclusion in a difficult time.
