Lars Erik Gabrielsen, mayor of Avannaata Municipality, has no plans to meet with either Trump's special envoy to Greenland, Jeff Landry, or the American doctor Joseph (Joe) Griffin, who is in Nuuk.
He will also not participate in the opening of the new consulate building in Nuuk. He tells Sermitsiaq that.
On Monday, the mayor informed Sermitsiaq that Landry's people had contacted him for a meeting and that he had not yet decided. Now he has decided:
– There will be no meeting with Jeff Landry, and I have also told the chairman of the Greenlandic government, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, that. I have also not arranged to meet with the doctor who is with him, says Gabrielsen and continues:
– It is lagging badly
– But in addition, we need to speak the same language about how things are going in our country. We must have the same conditions for health and business that benefit the locals and lift our society and the economy. It is still my opinion that things are lagging badly in the health sector.
Lars-Erik Gabrielsen believes that this is almost an American situation:
- We have lost too many loved ones. It is therefore good that there is now more focus and dialogue on inequality in health. This is almost an American situation in Greenland. If you are well insured, you can get private treatment in Denmark. Many citizens do not have that option. I really hope that something will happen in the health sector in Greenland. We need that, says Lars Erik Gabrielsen.
Are you attending the opening of the new consulate building on Thursday?
– I will be returning to Ilulissat the same day. And I am a bit homesick, so I do not plan to change my ticket to attend the opening of the consulate. However, I would have attended if it were possible for me, says the mayor.
