The problems with tax payments in the Municipality of Kujalleq have had legal repercussions, as the municipality will appear before the Court of Greenland on April 21.
The prosecution has filed charges to collect a tax fine of 6.1 million kroner from the municipality.
The municipality will not pay the fine, which is issued after a number of delayed and missing payments of A-tax and labor market taxes to the self-government in 2023 and 2024.
It was known in advance that the Municipality of Kujalleq neglected to pay taxes to the tax administration in three different months.
The indictment in the current case shows that the Tax Agency has noted 10 additional months in which the Municipality of Kujalleq actually paid the tax, but each time too late.
Therefore, from February 2023 to March 2024, there was a period of 13 months in which the municipality's payments were consistently either delayed or completely absent.
In total, this amounted to an amount of just under 407 million kroner that was not paid on time.
According to the indictment, this was done “intentionally or grossly negligently” and will result in a fine of 1.5 percent of the total amount, equivalent to approximately 6.1 million kroner. However, the Municipality of Kujalleq disagrees with this.
Gross negligence or not
The Municipality of Kujalleq has confirmed to Sermitsiaq that the information in the indictment about the delayed and absent payments is correct.
However, the Municipality denies having acted “intentionally or grossly negligently”. This means that the municipality does not have to pay a fine of 6.1 million kroner either, according to the Municipality itself.
More details will follow in the Court of Greenland on April 21.
- I prefer not to go into the matter until the court has made a decision. I have full confidence in the agencies involved, said municipal director Randi Vestergaard Evaldsen to Sermitsiaq's previous coverage of the trial.
It was not possible to get any further answers from her in light of the new information in the indictment.
