In August 2022, Greenland started a machinist training program at Teknikimik Ilinniarfik (KTI) Sisimiut in collaboration with Teknika in Lyngby (Teknika was called the Copenhagen School of Mechanical Engineers until November 1, 2024). The goal was to train more locals and strengthen the connection to the Greenlandic labor market.
However, the first group only numbered a small handful of students, including Alfred Mølgaard, who is now the first to graduate.
– It feels indescribably nice, says Alfred Mølgaard, who is 35 years old and originally from Qeqertarsuaq.
– I would very much like to return to Greenland and work. There are many opportunities, as the engineer training is very broad. I am not ruling anything out, but am open to dialogue with all companies and workplaces, says Alfred Mølgaard with a big grin that suggests that he has already received several offers.
Lots of job opportunities
The job opportunities are absolutely top notch for Alfred and other future engineer graduates, because there is a great shortage of their skills both on land and at sea with the operation and maintenance of technical plants and installations.
This applies both to the self-governing companies such as Royal Arctic Line, Royal Greenland, Tusass, Nukissiorfiit, Greenland Airports, in the municipalities, the self-government and private companies such as Polar Seafood, Inusuk, Permagreen, etc.
At sea or on land
In addition to his engineer's degree, Alfred Mølgaard also has an education as a mining and construction journeyman from the School of Mining in Sisimiut.
In addition, he has work experience both from the ruby mine and from the airport project in Nuuk, and he is looking forward to coming home and using the newly acquired skills.
– It could be at sea. It could also be on land. Maybe at Nukissiorfiit or somewhere else. I'm going to relax for a while, and then I plan to travel back to Qeqertarsuaq during February and say hello to my family, says Alfred Mølgaard, who encourages all young people with an interest in mathematics and physics to apply for the mechanical engineering program.
Interest, discipline and will
– You need to be interested in the technical subjects, and then you need to be a bit disciplined with your study habits, but if you are, then you can easily manage the program. If I can, so can others, says Alfred Mølgaard, who, however, experienced the study environment in Lyngby as very different from Sisimiut.
– There were many more students and larger classes, but I just tried to fight my way through and maintain optimism, says Alfred Mølgaard, who along the way received good moral support to continue his studies from his parents, older brother and his ex-girlfriend.
– And now I'm just relieved that I have completed the education. It's so nice, says Alfred Mølgaard.
