Nuuk: School delay will affect nursery children

The severely delayed and scandal-ridden school construction project, Atuarfik Inussuk, will have unfortunate consequences for children of nursery age in the capital.

The new school in Nuuk is not expected to open until the summer, and this will cause problems with having enough places for new nursery children, informs Komuneqarfik Sermersooq.

In a briefing to politicians in the Committee for Children and Families, the administration states that the consequence of the delayed school construction and the closure of ASK and USK will result in a temporary waiting list for nurseries.

The normal practice of starting the next 1st graders in the after-school program premises is not possible this year, as the premises are being used for school teaching, due to the closure of ASK and USK and the severely delayed school construction.

Domino effect

Kindergarten children will not be able to move into AKO until July 1st at the earliest, according to the administration in KommuneqarfikSermersooq.

- This is expected to result in a temporary waiting list for nurseries, as kindergarten children cannot be promoted in AKO, and there will therefore be a lack of space to promote nursery children to kindergarten, according to the minutes of the latest committee meeting in Children and Families.

The delayed school construction thus creates an unfortunate domino effect down through the different generations of children, with the youngest being affected.

It is announced that there are still free kindergarten places and the possibility of temporarily opening already closed nursery rooms.

Mold

Back in October last year, Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq announced that it expects Atuarfik Inussuk to open its doors to students when the new school year starts this summer.

The severely delayed school construction has presented the municipality with major challenges, which became even greater when ASK and USK were forced to close in the autumn because mold was detected.

This has resulted in the municipality having to find suitable teaching spaces. A puzzle where it now turns out that a piece is missing, which will have consequences for children of nursery age in the coming spring.
