Naalakkersuisoq for fishery, hunting, agriculture and self-sufficiency, Peter Borg (D), and naalakkersuisoq for social affairs, labor market, housing, infrastructure and outlying districts, Aqqaluaq B. Egede (IA), are now holding a press conference about the preparedness.
- Today we present the emergency plan. Prepared for crises: be ready for five days, says Peter Borg.
He says that there is a brochure that comes with advice on how to get by for five days.
- The more people who can take care of themselves and help others, the stronger we are as a society, he says.
Peter Borg says that a few tips and preparations can make a big difference. The tips in the brochure have been developed in collaboration with the municipalities, Greenland police, businesses and more.
Due diligence
He assures that there is no danger, but that the plan comes as a preparation in case something goes wrong.
- It's about timely care, not that something is on the way, says Peter Borg.
He cites experiences from power outages and Covid-19 as examples of how preparation is important.
- The recommendation of five days is based on professional assessments of realistic crisis scenarios, their duration, and the conditions we have in the country, such as climate and infrastructure, says Peter Borg.
Five days gives the emergency services the necessary leeway to ensure that the emergency services arrive where they are needed most.
We must stand together.
Aqqaluaq B. Egede says that the plan is being presented to the entire community in an easy-to-read format.
"This is important information, and it is important that we provide the right information in a timely manner," he says.
He says the debate on social media and in the press is very fierce.
- You, who sit on the coast, we stand behind you. We stand together in Naalakkersuisut. And we have no doubt that you and you stand behind us.
- It's about our entire society. Questions are being asked about whether we can keep our identity and culture. We must stand together, says Aqqaluaq B. Egede.
Create unity on social media
He says that unity creates strength.
- It is very important that we on Facebook stand together. Our positions should not be too big. The important thing is that we stand together and we share the same values, he says.
- From the outside, there are those who want us to split up and disagree, says Aqqaluaq B. Egede.
And he says that it is important for the Government of Greenland that the population stands behind us.
The emergency response area is being strengthened
Peter Borg takes over again and talks about the ongoing strengthening of cooperation with emergency services in Denmark.
"We will soon send equipment to the most vulnerable areas on the coast," he says.
Work is being done to gain knowledge in the area, so that people from outside can come to help. In the agreement with Denmark, it was agreed that it is not only what is mentioned in the agreement that will be provided with necessary equipment.
- We have the right to go to the emergency services in Denmark and ask for more help, says Peter Borg.
Military action
The members of the Greenlandic Parliament are asked how they relate to the US's statements that they would take over the country by military force.
- Of course, we must work to ensure that there is no military action in this country, says Aqqaluaq B. Egede.
- It is important that our identity as Greenlanders is also respected by other countries. Therefore, we cannot accept that people try to pressure our identity.
He points out that no one is going to take over Greenland, especially not an ally.
- It is important for us to emphasize that everyone who can afford to prepare for a potential crisis situation should prepare, says Peter Borg.
- I can't comment on defense and the situation right now, says Peter Borg.
The coalition will present something within the defense sector, he says.
President Donald Trump has repeatedly stated that he wants control over Greenland, and has not previously ruled out military force.
However, Major General Søren Andersen of the Arctic Command says that there is no military threat to Greenland at the moment, and that he does not see a NATO country taking military action against another NATO country. However, he sees a future where Russia could turn its attention to Greenland.
Outlying areas
He says that there are differences in places in the country and their needs, and that the emergency response will prioritize the most vulnerable.
More information about the outer areas will be available.
- For Naalakkersuisut it is very important that we remember the most vulnerable, says Aqqaluaq B. Egede.
He says that there is certain information that the Greenland Government is withholding to create security.
- It is important that we stand together and not just wait for the authorities, says Aqqaluaq B. Egede.
As a household, you should ideally be prepared for all possible scenarios, says Peter Borg.
Because the more prepared you are, the more effort you can put into helping the vulnerable. So those who need it most will get help from the authorities.
- It's hard to say who needs help the most, but we have good cooperation with the municipalities, says Aqqaluaq B. Egede.
They conclude by saying that one should expect ongoing press conferences in the coming time, regarding the various other areas of responsibility. And that this is to create security and preparation in society.
They are trying to get a sign language interpreter for future press conferences.
