Researcher calls Landry's statements "fascinating amnesia"

On Sunday evening, Sermitsiaq asked Trump's special envoy to Greenland, Jeff Landry, about his statements that the US should take over Greenland, which he wrote on social media in connection with his inauguration as special envoy in December.

To that, Jeff Landry said:

– When has the US ever taken over another country? The US has never done anything like that, unlike European countries that have engaged in imperialism and colonialism."

– We have always engaged in open relations and with economic opportunities. Even after World War II, when we as the only superpower had the opportunity, we did not. We helped rebuild Europe and Asia. I find it fascinating that from a European perspective you see this as a kind of takeover. I just mean, when have we done that?

Genocide of the indigenous population of the US

Regarding this statement, senior researcher at the Danish Institute for International Studies (DIIS), Ulrik Pram Gad, says:

"Landry's remarks that the US has never engaged in imperialism and colonialism are an expression of a fascinating amnesia. First of all, the entire US is founded on having displaced and committed genocide against the majority of the indigenous population of America. "First, the United States' expansion continued in the late 19th century into what can only be called an empire in the Pacific and the Caribbean."
