Today, the Sermitsiaq Media House and its editor-in-chief and director Masaana Egede have won the Jyllands-Posten Foundation's Freedom of Expression Award 2026.

This is in recognition of "their persistent work for a free, critical and independent journalism under great pressure from those in power, who in many ways tried to influence the media," writes the Jyllands-Posten Foundation in a press release.

They are referring here to the threat from the American President, Donald Trump, to take over Greenland, and the massive pressure it has put on everyday life in the media house.

"This happened in parallel with the employees also taking on the task of helping and supporting educators for hundreds of foreign journalists from all over the world for whom Greenland was suddenly the center of world political events high up in the north."

The Freedom of Expression Prize was established in 2006. Previous winners include author Ayaan Hirsi Ali, journalist Puk Damsgård, director of the think tank Justitia Jacob Mchangama and lawyer Mads Pramming.

The prize also includes 100,000 kroner. The winner is chosen by the Jyllands-Posten Foundation.
