Siumut candidates hit by digital blackout in the middle of the election campaign

Aka Hansen and Doris Jakobsen Jensen, both candidates for Siumut in the general election, suddenly lost access to their public Facebook pages in the middle of the election campaign. Doris J. Jensen's page had more than ten thousand followers, and neither can comment or reply to posts from their private profiles.

Doris J. Jensen and Aka Hansen are at a loss as to why their profiles have been hit by technical blockages. Both candidates fear that external factors or system errors are sabotaging their ability to campaign along the coast.

A digital block is currently preventing Doris J. Jensen and Aka Hansen from participating in the public debate on Facebook. Sermitsiaq has spoken to the two people, who both report problems getting through on the platform after an unexplained episode.

Both Aka Hansen and Doris J. Jensen claim that they have never experienced similar situations before. Among other things, they are losing access to videos and posts that were a central part of their election campaign strategy, which limits their opportunities for dialogue with voters.

"It's tough in an election campaign if you can't reply back," says Aka Hansen.

Messages failed

On top of that, Doris J. Jensen is experiencing that many of her private messages are marked as failed. She describes the situation as problematic, since much of the communication in modern Greenland takes place via Facebook.

- It's challenging, and it seems suspicious that it affects Siumut candidates. It raises some thoughts when it's us who are affected by the situation, says Doris Jakobsen Jensen.

Aka Hansen doesn't know whether the problems are due to system errors, automatic moderation or a targeted action, but she believes that it is particularly affecting voices that speak for independence and Inuit rights. She has tried to contact both Facebook and the authorities without getting a response. According to Facebook, she will not be able to comment normally again until March 24 at 11.44.

- The election campaign is short, and we haven't had the opportunity to travel to all cities. It limits us when we can't use Facebook to reach out to voters along the entire coast, says Aka Hansen.

Must change strategy

Aka Hansen must now change her election campaign strategy at short notice.

- I can still use the channels I have, but I've lost all the videos I've already posted – even the ones that people have shared have been removed. I'm unsure of what I'm doing right now, but I'll do my very best to reach out to people, she says.

Doris J. Jensen won't point to a specific explanation, but emphasizes that outside influence is a known problem.

- We know that other countries are trying to influence politics in other countries, and we also have skilled IT people in Greenland. But I don't know where this alleged hacker attack came from, she says.

According to Doris J. Jensen, Facebook stated that she would be able to comment again from today, March 18, 2026 - but that is not yet possible, she says.

According to KNR, Naleraq's parliamentary candidate Najannguaq Hegelund has also experienced problems with access to her Facebook profile.
