Siumut halved and losing money

Two profiles are out, the mandates have been cut in half. But the party's million-kroner subsidy will not be cut until July 1.

Vivian Motzfeldt and Kim Kielsen are out, and only Erik Jensen and Lars Poulsen are left in Inatsisartut for Siumut.

Siumut suffered a hard blow when Vivian Motzfeldt and Kim Kielsen resigned on Tuesday.

In one fell swoop, the party went from four to two mandates in Inatsisartut. A halving that weakens the party both politically – and financially.

But the money does not disappear immediately.

According to the head of the Inatsisartut Bureau, Kent Fridberg, the party's support is rigged in such a way that changes will not take effect until mid-year.

– Each party receives a basic subsidy of 1 million kroner annually, plus 323,000 kroner per mandate in Inatsisartut, he explains.

The change will not be felt until July

When a member leaves a party, the party loses the corresponding mandate subsidy. However, the subsidy is only adjusted twice a year, on January 1 and July 1.

This means that Siumut will keep the “old” subsidy in the first half of the year, based on the four mandates the party had at the beginning of the year.

Only from July 1 will the reality change.

Here, Siumut will lose the subsidy for two mandates – equivalent to 646,000 kroner annually.

This means that the party is not only left with fewer votes in the chamber, but also fewer funds in the coffers.
