The work on Uppik - the expansion of the Ilimmarfik campus - is now taking an important step forward.
– The construction programs for the upcoming projects have been completed and set the direction for how Ilisimatusarfik's physical framework can be developed in the coming years, says University Director Christine Tønnesen.
Management tool for the construction
The construction programs, which function as the backbone of the project, can be viewed on Ilisimatusarfik's website.
– The construction programs collect wishes, needs and requirements and become the management tool that guides the entire process - from the first sketches to the finished construction. At the same time, they form the basis for further work when advisors and partners tackle the next phases. In other words, the foundation has been laid - not just on paper, but for the development of an even stronger Ilisimatusarfik in the future, says Christine Tønnesen.
The space is too tight
The reason for the expansion of the campus is that the space has become too tight. The buildings were originally built for around 130 students and 20 teachers. Today they house over 600 students and more than 100 teachers.
In addition, challenges with mold and poor indoor climate at Ilinniarfissuaq have meant that a large part of the teaching of student teachers today also takes place at Ilisimatusarfik.
Qassi, Inua and Qulleq
A significant main point in the construction program is therefore that the Institute of Learning must be provided with better facilities. In addition, better opportunities for distance learning must be established, so that it can reach the whole of Greenland.
A multi-purpose hall will also be built, making it possible to hold large events, conferences, sports and theatre courses and which will be open to students and citizens during their free time for sports and fitness.
National cultural heritage
Furthermore, facilities will be established that enable the inclusion of the surrounding nature in teaching. Finally, a conservation and documentation centre will be built, which will make it possible to house our national cultural heritage, natural heritage and art and activate it in teaching and dissemination in Nuuk and the rest of Greenland.
– The expansion consists of several central parts. Qaasi will be a new building that will create space for future activities and needs. Inua is also a new building that expands the existing facilities, while Qulleq is the name for the current buildings that will be rebuilt and integrated into the overall new campus project, says Christine Tønnesen.
7,000 m² of new construction
According to the construction programs, the new Qassi building will have an area of approximately 2,000 m² and will be located in the northern area of Ilimmarfik. The building will house modern classrooms, a multifunctional hall and common areas for both academic and cultural activities for students, employees and citizens.
In addition to Qassi, Ilimatusarfik is also expected to be expanded to the west with the teaching building Inua of approximately 5,000 m².
Finally, it is a great wish and goal that all building parts in Ilimmarfik will eventually be physically connected, so that it is possible to move around the area dry-footed.
The entire campus project is expected to cost 500-600 million kroner.
