DEBATE EVENTS

The role of the Constitution in the Kingdom

The event will take place at the Greenland House in Copenhagen.
Published

On the occasion of Constitution Day, Inuit Ataqatigiit Folketingimi invites you to a debate on the significance of the Constitution for the Kingdom's northernmost countries, the Faroe Islands and Greenland.

It will take place on 5 June, from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at the Greenland House in Copenhagen.

The Constitution was last amended in 1953. In this context, Greenland ceased to be a colony and became a Danish county and at the same time received two seats in the Danish Parliament, which were also allocated to the Faroe Islands.

Since the constitutional amendment, both Denmark, the Faroe Islands and Greenland have changed a lot and the world looks very different today. In both Greenland and the Faroe Islands, there is a desire to change the current relationship with Denmark. There is a call for more self-determination and greater involvement in decisions on issues that are currently under Danish responsibility.

Constitution Day debate

The question is whether the Greenlandic and Faroese wishes can be accommodated under the Constitution at all or whether the Constitution should be amended? And what considerations are being made regarding an amendment to the Constitution, rather than an actual withdrawal from the Kingdom?

These and more questions will be debated on Constitution Day, where Inuit Ataqatigiit brings together a number of experts and opinion leaders to discuss the possibility of real equality and independent action under the Constitution and what possible paths can be taken if the goal is a Kingdom consisting of several equal countries.

The event will include presentations from:

Naaja H. Nathanielsen (Inuit Ataqatigiit), member of parliament and former Naalakkersuisoq, Høgni Hoydal (Tjóðveldi), member of parliament and former deputy parliamentarian and ministerFrederik Waage, Professor, Dr.jur., constitutional and administrative law, University of Southern Denmark, Kristian Joensen and Bárður Larsen, associate professors at the University of the Faroe Islands.

Program follows. The presentations will be held in Danish, but there will be interpretation between Danish and Greenlandic. The event is open to everyone, but registration is required via the link.

Registration must be done no later than June 1st: https://billetto.dk/e/oqallitsitsinissaq-tunngaviusumik-inatsisip-naalagaaffeqatigiinnermi-inissisimanera-debatarrangement-grundlovens-rolle-i-rigsfaellesskabet-billetter-1913334?bref=eyJzIjoib3JnYW5pc2VyIiwibSI6InNoYXJlIiwiYyI6Im1hbmFnZV92aXNpdCIsImNvIjoiMSIsInQiOjE3NzgxNjQ1OTl9
