- It's too bad that this case is being dragged out again and again. It is a clear violation of human rights that has occurred.
This is what Inger Platou, one of the women who had an IUD inserted without consent in the 1970s, says.
Since the escalation of the geopolitical situation at the beginning of the year, caused by Donald Trump, the women have been somewhat cautious about speaking out, she says.
Nevertheless, she has agreed to give her reaction to the delay in the report, which is to clarify, among other things, whether human rights have been violated during the IUD campaign.
The investigation was launched by the Greenlandic government in August last year. A good eight months after Muté B. Egede called the IUD case genocide, and one month before the Danish Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, apologized to the victims.
Should not be up for discussion at all
70-year-old Inger Platou was herself present in Katuaq in Nuuk that day at the end of September to receive the apology.
She had an IUD inserted during a minor operation at the age of 20. She only found out when she woke up on the bed afterwards.
- I didn't think about it any further because I was so young then, she says.
Although the apology from the Danish government meant a lot to Inger Platou, she is looking forward to the case finally being closed.
- We all do, we women. It's about our feelings, she says.
Actually, Inger Platou doesn't think it should be up for discussion whether or not human rights violations have been committed. So the report is taking so long to come out is frustrating.
- When you treat people that way and just do what you've done to the women, without asking, without consent, I definitely think it's a human rights violation, she says.
- Now the Danish government has issued an apology. And the next thing will be for that report to be completed. I hope that happens without further discussion and delay, so that the women can have peace of mind.
