The US Ambassador to Denmark Ken Howery and the US Consul in Nuuk, Susan A. Wilson, are behind an invitation to the opening reception of the new US consulate at Imaneq 41 in the center of Nuuk on Thursday, May 21, from 2-5 p.m.
According to Sermitsiaq's information, a large number of business contacts, partners and opinion leaders have been invited to the opening, which is also a celebration of the 250th anniversary of the US's declaration of independence in 1776.
The US would not confirm or deny affiliation
Sermitsiaq was the first media outlet to reveal that the US had taken over the entire basement of the 3,000 m2 newly constructed building back in May 2024, after it had been equipped with bulletproof glass and grilles, among other things.
At that time, neither the US embassy nor the consulate in Nuuk would confirm that it was their new domicile in Greenland.
Even when the US transported four armored vehicles by Hercules aircraft to Nuuk in mid-March 2025 and then drove the cars under Imaneq 41, the Americans would not confirm their connection to the building.
A spokesperson from the US embassy told Sermitsiaq at the time that she could not announce anything at this time:
"Since the US decided to reopen our consulate in Nuuk in 2020, we have been working to identify and secure the right location. We look forward to being able to share more about it in the near future".
The day after the Future Greenland conference
It will be on May 21st that the consulate in Nuuk will officially move from a red building on Sipisaq Kujalleq in Kujallerpaat to the center of Nuuk.
The opening will take place the day after the Greenland Chamber of Commerce held the Future Greenland conference in Nuuk on May 19-20th, where both the US Ambassador to Denmark Ken Howery and the US Consul Susan A. Wilson are on the list of participants. In addition, US President Donald Trump's special envoy to Greenland, Jeff Landry, has also announced his arrival at the Future Greenland conference.
