Journalist and author Martin Breum has launched a new podcast series, where he interviews researchers and other knowledgeable people from Denmark, Greenland and the rest of the Arctic on topics such as Trump, the spiral campaign, armaments, cryolite, forced removals of children, fishing quotas and much more.
– Hopefully, listeners will thus have the opportunity to put the many news items into a larger context and formulate opinions on an informed, fact-based basis. In a Trump era, where facts and truth are challenged by distortions and falsehoods, it is more important than ever that we hold on to reality, says Martin Breum.
Deep self-examination and emotional confrontations
The first episode is already online, and it is about the Danes' own perception of the Danish effort in Greenland during the colonial period and up to the present day.
– The classic Danish narrative that everything in Greenland is done for the benefit of Greenland and to the honor of Denmark is being strongly challenged. The spiral case, the forced removal of the many children of Greenlandic families in Denmark, the adoptions, the cryolit case and other cases are gradually making it impossible to maintain the old narrative. That is why, according to associate professor Kirsten Thisted, who teaches at Ilisimatusarfik and the University of Copenhagen, many Danes are engaged in deep self-examination and emotional confrontation, says Martin Breum, who has worked extensively with Greenland and the Arctic for more than 15 years.
Ownership and control of Greenland
The upcoming episodes will be more political. Here, a new proposal for how Donald Trump's claim for ownership and control over Greenland might be averted will be highlighted.
Later, Martin Breum also has an interview with Sara Olsvig about Greenland's own rapprochement with the USA, and finally there is also an episode where plans for armament in Greenland and the Faroe Islands will be dug deep.
The podcast is produced by Videnskab.dk and Jakob Gottchau in collaboration with DIIS and Nasiffik - Center for Foreign & Security Policy at Ilisimatusarfik, University of Greenland. The podcast is supported by the Carlsberg Foundation.
