Life's challenges are conveyed through poetic texts.
SIGU's new release mixes modern funk with deep, metaphorical lyrics and a distinctive attitude that gives the music both edge and presence.
Johannes Sigurdsen, singer and guitarist in the music group SIGU, is releasing a new album in collaboration with Miké Thomsen under the name “SIGU og Miké: Malungivara”, which was released on November 14th.
Through 11 tracks, such as “Qivittorsuit”, “Sulerpit?” and “Qaammat Nuisoq”, the listener is taken on a journey through life's challenges and reflections, told with poetic and metaphorical lyrics.
The breathtaking use of the music genres funk and indie rock makes the music more catchy and creates the finest framework for an expression that is energetic and thoughtful.
The band consists of eight band members including Johannes Sigurdsen himself, Miké Thomsen, Paaliit Mølgaard Rasmussen and Kristoffer Jul Reenberg. Other musical guests are HH Suersaq, Jens Kleist and Louise Nipper and many more.
As I listen to the songs, I am introduced to a world of music that is universal, beautiful, and personal.
The raw and the sensitive
The lyrics have a strong attitude and honesty about them, as SIGU manages to balance the raw and the sensitive to create a sound that feels relatable and apt.
The texts touch on strong topics, such as the spiral case, colonialism and identity. This is what makes it more relatable and socially relevant, because the themes reflect real issues in Greenland from a modern Greenlandic perspective.
Something that particularly caught my attention as a listener is the use of words like kaperlak (winter darkness, ed.), which adds a distinct cultural ‘touch’ and Greenlandic tone to the songs.
The band SIGU is not a new name in the Greenlandic music world, the band has, among other things, been nominated for the Nordic Council Music Prize in 2023.
SIGU really gained attention with the album “Ujartaraat Qaamaneq”, which was released two years ago and secured the band a nomination for the Koda Awards 2023 for “Award of the Year”.
Worth listening to
This album doesn't disappoint either.
With its indie elements and deep lyrics, the album provides a sense of acceptance, understanding and light in these darker times.
Among the album's notable contributors is Angutimmarik Fleischer, who contributes to the track “Soorlumi najorimma?”. His voice gives a special expression, almost with David Draiman vibes from the band Disturbed. The deep male vocals and the slow, heavy mood create an intense and captivating atmosphere. Thank you for that experience.
For those of you who want to experiment with music genres such as modern funk, indie disco and rock with talented Greenlandic musicians, the album “SIGU & Miké” is worth listening to.
The album “SIGU & Miké” is available on several streaming services such as Spotify and Apple Music.
