SIGU's new release mixes modern funk with deep, metaphorical lyrics and a distinctive attitude that gives the music both edge and presence.
Johannes Sigurdsen, singer and guitarist in the music group SIGU, in collaboration with Miké Thomsen, will release a new album below the name "SIGU and Miké: Malungivara", which was released on November 14.
Through 11 tracks like “Qivittorsuit”, “Sulerpit?” and "Qaammat Nuisoq" the listener is taken through a journey through life's challenges and reflections, told with poetic and metaphorical texts.
The breathtaking use of the music genre funk and indie rock makes the music more catchy and forms the finest frame for an expression that is energetic and thoughtful.
The band consists of eight band members among others Johannes Sigurdsen himself, Miké Thomsen, Paaliit Mølgaard Rasmussen and Kristoffer Christmas Reenberg. Other musical guests are HH Suersaq, Jens Kleist and Louise Nippers and many more.
When I listen to the songs, I am introduced to a world of music that is universal, beautiful and personal.
The raw and the sensitive
The texts have a strong attitude and honesty about him, as SIGU manages to balance the raw and the sensitivity to create a sound that feels relatable and apt.
The lyrics are touching strong topics, such as the spiral case, colonialism and identity. That's what does it more relatable and close to society, because the themes reflect real ones issues in Greenland in a modern Greenlandic perspective.
Some of it what particularly caught my attention as a listener is the use of words like cockerel (winter darkness, ed.), which gives the songs a distinct cultural 'touch' and Greenlandic tone.
The band SIGU is not a new name in the Greenlandic scene music world, the band has, among other things, been nominated by the Nordic Council music prize in 2023.
SIGU got for serious attention with the album "Ujartaraat Qaamaneq", which was released two years ago since and secured the band a nomination for the Koda Awards 2023 for "Award of the Year".
Worth it listen to
This album doesn't disappoint either.
With its indie elements and deep lyrics, gives the album a feeling of acceptance, understanding and light in these darker times.
Among the album's significant contributor is Angutimmarik Fleischer, who contributes to the track “Soorlumi najorimma?”. His voice gives a special expression, almost with David Draiman vibes from the band Disturbed. The deep male vocals and the slow, heavy atmosphere create an intense and alluring atmosphere. Thanks for that experience.
To you, there will experiment music genre like modern funk, indie disco and rock with talented Greenlandic musicians, that is the album "SIGU & Miké" worth listening to.
The album "SIGU & Miké" is available on several streaming services such as Spotify and Apple Music.
