No Consideration of Boycott of the US from GIF

(HD) The Greenland Sports Association (GIF) is currently not considering a boycott or changes to Greenland's participation in sporting events in the United States, despite the tense political situation between Greenland and the United States and statements from President Donald Trump.

No Consideration of Boycott of the US from GIF

This was stated by GIF Chairman of the Board, Claus Nielsen, in an email to AG.

- We are following political developments closely, and if there are any recommendations different from today, we will comply with them. But as it stands now, there are no immediate considerations about cooperation with the US, it says.

Tightens guidelines for international media

Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq has published new guidelines for international journalists on its website. The background is an increasing number of inquiries from foreign media and limited administrative capacity.

The municipality states that not all requests can be accommodated, and that the mayor does not participate in interviews about international or geopolitical matters. At the same time, emphasis is placed on compliance with Greenlandic legislation and enhanced protection of children and vulnerable groups, including a ban on recordings without consent.

Expansion of cemetery in Qeqertaq

The capacity of the existing cemetery in the settlement of Qeqertaq has been exhausted, and an expansion is therefore necessary to ensure space for future graves. The expansion can only take place in a western direction, as in the other directions there are either large stones or insufficient soil depth. The new plan for the cemetery expansion has come into force as of 7 January 2026.

Fire reveals serious failure

During the fire at the construction site of the new airport in Ilulissat, it became apparent that the emergency services lacked sufficient water supplies to effectively extinguish the fire. During the extinguishing work, firefighters had to rely on water trucks from the city because there are no proper water reservoirs at the airport – a problem the municipality has previously pointed out. The municipality writes on its website. The incident highlights a serious structural emergency response failure, which according to the mayor must be corrected before the airport opens, so that safety can be in order in the event of any future fires.

Staff shortages and economic pressures challenge the healthcare system

In its annual report 2025, the Danish Health Council points to the need for better data on citizens' experiences, more robust financing and strengthened management of the healthcare system. The Council recommends, among other things, a recurring questionnaire survey among citizens and an impartial analysis of finances, budget management and prioritization. The biggest challenge remains the chronic staff shortage and the high use of temporary workers. Therefore, more rotation schemes with Danish hospitals, educational collaborations and a significant improvement in HR efforts are proposed. At the same time, telemedicine is highlighted as a bright spot, and the Danish Health Council calls for a faster rollout of digital solutions and increased clinical ownership in the work with a new electronic patient record system.

Young people must also be heard

Siumut Ungdom calls on SORLAK, the national organization for children and youth counseling, to arrange a debate with the participation of the youth departments of all the country's parties about the current situation in Greenland. The youth department writes in a press release.

- We are the country's children and youth, and we are jointly responsible for Greenland becoming an independent state. We are Greenland's youth and thus Greenland's future. We consider it extremely important and necessary that the opinions and voices of children and youth are heard throughout the country.

The South wants to strengthen local sports

Sports stakeholders from the Municipality of Kujalleq gathered for a seminar in Qaqortoq earlier this week, with a total of 35 participants – including local sports associations, hall managers and cultural employees. The seminar focused on dialogue about municipal and regional subsidies, board work and rules within sports. The Municipality of Kujalleq writes on its website.

The aim of the seminar is to strengthen local sports. According to the organizers, the seminar was considered fruitful, and the participants decided to continue meetings and follow-up activities in their respective hometowns throughout the year.

New podcast competition gives students the floor

Kivitsisa and the National Agency for Education have launched “Atuartut Nipaat”, a new nationwide podcast competition for middle school students throughout Greenland. Students are invited to work creatively with sound and storytelling under the themes “My life” and “The good story”. All schools have received microphones, but this is not a requirement for participation. The podcasts are judged by a jury, and the winning entries will be broadcast on KNR Radio.
