On FOX News, the US president states that the US will now have “total access” to Greenland without any time limit. He also says that the US will not pay for it.
Sermitsiaq has presented the statements to Peter Viggo Jakobsen, an associate professor at the Danish Defense Academy. He tells Sermitsiaq that he finds it very difficult to see that Trump should have received anything that he did not already have under the defense agreement:
– As far as I can see, the US already has those options in the existing base agreement. But Trump has been all the way up the tree, and he got so far up that he got into the stratosphere.
- Now he has to crawl back down and say that he has won, because otherwise he is a laughing stock, says Peter Viggo Jakobsen.
- The European raccoons
He believes that Trump is now out to tell the American people that he has done something "great" for the United States:
- He has gotten something for free from the European scumbags. That will be the story he tours with, which we will then let go in one ear and out the other, so that we can move forward in a diplomatic way with the Americans, says Peter Viggo Jakobsen.
Since Trump proclaimed on Wednesday evening that the framework for a future agreement on Greenland was in place, there has been intense speculation about what this framework entails and whether NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has made concessions to Trump on behalf of the Kingdom.
Casts doubt on Golden Dome announcement
Peter Viggo Jakobsen believes this is not the case:
– He can't get anything from NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte either. Because as the Danish Prime Minister has already said, only Greenland and Denmark can negotiate directly with the US, and such negotiations have not taken place, says Peter Viggo Jakobsen.
In the interview with Fox News, Donald Trump says that part of the Golden Dome air defense system should be located in Greenland. Peter Viggo Jakobsen says that the radar at Pituffik Space Base already plays a role in detecting if missiles are heading towards the United States:
– This Golden Dome sounds fantastic, especially because it's made of gold. But it's largely science fiction, because experts don't think it can be done the way Trump imagines. So there's not much reality to it yet.
