On Saturday will be there are demonstrations in the big Danish cities against them American announcements and ambitions to annex Greenland. Behind The demonstrations are supported by the Inuit Association, the National Organization Uagut and Inter-national cooperation.
- Demonstrations are tentatively planned for Saturday at 12 noon Copenhagen, Aarhus and Aalborg - and we also expect Odense and several others cities will be added, says Camilla Siezing, chairperson of the Fællesforeningen Inuit, which is the umbrella organization for 20 Greenlandic associations in Denmark.
- Normally we don't get involved in political issues, but as the situation is now, it will affect with Greenlandic background, identity and culture. It has we find it difficult to be reticent about.
- We have therefore decided to take part in demonstrating in order to support around our compatriots in Greenland. We demand respect for that Danish Commonwealth and for Greenland's right to self-determination.
Peaceful demonstrations
- We hope that there will be many who will help to demonstrate - but we also think it is important that it be held peacefully and aims to send a clear signal of respect, sovereignty and equality, explains Camilla Siezing
- The interest in the demonstrations is enormous - and my phone has has practically not been quiet since we announced it on Monday evening. It is both people who want to participate and support – and here during Tuesday there are too received many calls from foreign journalists.
In Copenhagen, the demonstration begins at Rådhuspladsen - and will the participants walk towards the American embassy on Østerbro.
In Aarhus, the demonstration begins in the square in front of Aarhus Main station. From here, the demonstrators will walk along Nørregade towards Aarhus Cathedral.
As in the other cities, the demonstration begins in Aalborg at 12. It happens at Nytorv, but the further route from here is not yet determined.
