EU ambassadors have been summoned to an emergency meeting in Brussels on Sunday about Greenland and new tariff threats from US President Donald Trump.

This was announced by Cyprus, which holds the EU presidency, according to the Reuters news agency on Saturday evening.

The announcement comes a day after Trump said Denmark and seven other countries would be hit with a 10 percent tariff starting February 1 until the US and Denmark make a deal on Greenland. The tariff rate could increase further later.

Meanwhile, European countries are coordinating a response.

EU diplomats say, according to the Reuters news agency, that the meeting is set to begin at 5:00 p.m.

Denmark and European countries have responded with joint condemnation of Trump's statement.

- Tariffs could undermine transatlantic relations and risk leading to a dangerous downward spiral, writes EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on X.

- Europe will remain united, coordinated and determined to maintain its sovereignty.

On Saturday, thousands of people in Greenland and Denmark demonstrated against the desire for control and ownership of Greenland, which Trump has expressed several times.

During the week, Denmark has attempted to increase dialogue with the US about Greenland through, among other things, a foreign ministers' meeting in Washington, D.C.

At the same time, Denmark has increased the European presence in Greenland through a military exercise with support from a number of countries.

That was precisely one of Trump's points of criticism when he made his announcement about tariffs against Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, Great Britain, the Netherlands and Finland in a lengthy post on Truth Social. All countries are participating in the military exercise.

"This is a very dangerous situation for the safety and survival of the planet. These countries, playing this very dangerous game, have introduced a level of risk that is unsustainable," Trump wrote.
