An immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz without restrictions is "of crucial importance" for the world.
This is what EU President Antonio Costa says. The announcement comes after discussions with regional leaders from the Middle East in connection with the informal EU summit in Cyprus.
- The Strait of Hormuz must be reopened immediately without restrictions and without charging fees, in full compliance with international law and the principle of freedom of navigation.
- This is of crucial importance for the whole world, says Costa at a press conference after the discussions in Cyprus.
Denmark was represented here by acting Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen (S).
She calls the situation in the Middle East "very fragile".
- It is the one around the Strait of Hormuz. It is in relation to Lebanon and in reality in relation to the internal dynamics in the Middle East
- But also in relation to an energy crisis, which will have far-reaching serious consequences for everyone in Denmark, and in relation to the fact that it could trigger a new refugee flow that Europe cannot honor in the same way as in 2015, says Mette Frederiksen.
She welcomes Friday's meeting with leaders from Lebanon, Syria, Egypt, Jordan and the Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council.
- The countries that were present today are some of those that are willing to contribute to a peaceful solution in the Middle East.
- We need to work together. Both with the Gulf countries and with other allies to create a more sustainable peace, says Mette Frederiksen.
However, she acknowledges that it is difficult for Europe and the participating countries from the region to find an end to the war, which was started by the US and Israel.
- It is not entirely clear to some what strategy has been written in relation to the end of the war.
- We must try to contribute to this happening, says Mette Frederiksen.
