Suicide prevention in the form of a podcast

Author Niviaq Korneliussen has devoted her efforts to shedding light on the issue of suicide for many years. With her new podcast, she hopes that knowledge about suicide and suicide prevention will become more accessible to more people.

Niviaq Korneliussen, author, came out on Thursday, April 23 with a new podcast about suicide and suicide prevention.

Over 12 episodes, 'Inuuneq Annernaaraangat Podcast', which is the name of the new podcast, unfolds the suicide problem in this country.

- The suicide prevention that I have seen all this time is very much lacking. There is nothing out there that is tangible and easy to understand for the ordinary citizen, she says.

So Niviaq Korneliussen would like to change that.

Although she has worked with suicide through her books, art and various lectures, the podcast medium can do something that other media cannot, she believes.

- You can listen to podcasts while driving, while going for a walk or cooking. And I wanted to make it as accessible as possible – while of course it should also be fun to listen to, she says.

Suicide podcast

Niviaq Korneliussen has spoken to both researchers and psychologists who share their knowledge about suicide prevention – but who also highlight the great lack of research in this area.

And then you also meet some of the people who have themselves experienced losing their loved ones to suicide. Something that has made a big impression on Niviaq Korneliussen.

- They have been really brave. It takes a lot out of them to stand and tell their stories into a microphone, she says.

Personally, Niviaq Korneliussen has also found it extremely motivating to talk to some of the survivors.

- Even though life has been hard for them at an early age – they look forward. It brightens my mood, she says.

What do you hope that listeners will take away after listening to the podcast?

- I really hope that they will listen to the whole thing, replies Niviaq Korneliussen.

She also hopes that people will also have the courage to join the fight and contribute to reducing the suicide rate - despite a system that has long failed.

- It shouldn't be that people who need help have to go through a long waiting list before they can get help, she says and continues:

- Maybe we feel that we can't do anything. But we can, we all can.
