At a general meeting this week, Emma Lennert has been elected as the new president of ICC Kalaallit Nunaat. The board has also been elected for the period 2026 to 2030.
The new board term will not begin until July 25, when the current board has handed over the presidency of ICC International to Canada in connection with the ICC's general meeting in Iqaluit.
This is stated by the ICC in a press release.
The election of Emma Lennert means farewell to the current president Hjalmar Dahl.
- The political agenda has changed very quickly
He states that he is handing over the leadership to a new and competent board with a clear conscience and peace of mind:
- It has been an exciting period to participate in this work, where the world and the political agenda have changed very quickly, and where the ICC has had a significant influence on both the Arctic and the rest of the international political situation, states Hjalmar Dahl.
He is proud of how ICC Kalaallit Nunaat has handled the presidency of the ICC in the period 2022-2026, and on this occasion thanks Sara Olsvig, who has handled the international management.
Emma Lennert has been on the board for the past four years, and is therefore well aware of her upcoming duties:
- It is a great pleasure and honour for me to be elected as President and Vice-Chair of ICC Kalaallit Nunaat, says Emma Lennert.
Sara Olsvig to continue on the board
Current chair of ICC International, Sara Olsvig, will therefore continue as an ordinary board member of ICC Kalaallit Nunaat when the chairmanship is handed over to Canada in July.
She looks back on four exciting and busy years as an international chairwoman in a changing world:
- The ICC's work is particularly important in these years, when indigenous peoples have to fight extra hard for our rights.
- At the same time, it is important that new forces come in, and I am incredibly proud and secure with Emma and Nivi at the helm of ICC Kalaallit Nunaat. When our presidency ends this summer, I look forward to continuing to support them in their work as an ordinary board member and delegate in ICC Kalaallit Nunaat, says Sara Osvig.
