Igdlo in Tasiilaq serves as a crucial social foundation for the city's youth

Igdlo in Tasiilaq serves as a crucial social foundation for the city's youth. Since just over one in four residents of Tasiilaq is between 14 and 30 years old, the house is an essential gathering point for a large part of the city's population, who can be young together and learn from each other.

Igdlo is not just a house, but a safe haven created by youth for youth, where conflict management and healthy values are the basic premise. In the house, some people wear makeup, others play table football, while the rest either chat or do the tasks that belong to the house's operation.

Regional Manager Hjørdis Viberg in Tasiilaq states that the house is the engine behind positive development for youth in East Greenland. Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq writes this on its website.

- Our municipal youth culture center has meant a huge amount to the positive direction that I see the youth in Tasiilaq taking. In Igdlo, they have a healthy and supportive place to transition from youth to adulthood – and a nice place to be, says Hjørdis Viberg.

The role models are the young volunteers

Igdlo's everyday operations depend on the young volunteers, who take responsibility for everything from cooking to conflict resolution. They function as role models for their peers. The young people learn life skills that extend far beyond the four walls of Igdlo. The volunteers are young people who actively participate in the house's activities, and they are called the volunteer group.

- They make a huge effort. And they help to create the good foundation that makes this house a good place to be young, says the manager of the Igdlo Youth Culture Center, Hans Poul Andersen.

From dog sledding to leadership courses

In Igdlo, there are activities ranging from dog sledding and kayak building to Mountain Leader courses and sex education.

With access to two cabins, the house acts as a springboard, making it easy for young people to go out into nature.

Igdlo has been a gathering place for young people for almost five years, since it was established in 2021. The house is aimed at 14-30 year olds, an age group that makes up more than a quarter of the city's total population.
