Jens-Frederik Nielsen takes the helm: - It went faster than expected

- I have always believed that one day we would get there. I just didn't expect it to happen so soon, says Jens-Frederik Nielsen.

- I have always believed that one day we would get there. I just didn't expect it to happen so soon, says Jens-Frederik Nielsen.

At the election on 11 March something happened, no one had predicted. Not even the media had predicted that Democracy would end as the big winner of the election. But during the evening it began to look as if Jens-Frederik Nielsen could become the next chairman of Naalakkersuisut.

– When we saw the numbers from Kitsissuarsuit, I thought it looks like we can win. That's where I first saw it signs. Then came the cities and we started to take victories in the smaller cities. I thought: We can actually become the biggest party, he says.

And they were. From just three mandates in last election period, Demokraatit has grown to ten and has now taken over the role of the country's largest party. A significant change in Greenlandic politics - at a time when the eyes of the world are increasingly directed towards Greenland.

Youngest chairman of Naalakkersuisut

Jens Frederik Nielsen is 33 years old now Greenland's youngest chairman of Naalakkersuisut ever. He has for several years been a clear and distinctive voice in Inatsisartut, but when we met him at his new office, he seemed to be calmer.

However, it is far from synonymous with the fact that the role of the country's leader will be a quiet period.

- Me know that people talk about the hot seat, but in reality it is not like that hot. It can be lonely sitting there at times, but I have talented and good people around me, and that means everything, he says.
