Jukku Kielsen and his companion reached the summit of Ukkusissat just at the same time as the much-discussed meeting between Greenland, Denmark and the USA ended.
They began the ascent at one o'clock on Wednesday, and after two hours of climbing, they finally reached the summit – just as the sun rose.
– When I raised our flag, I was close to tears. When the sun came out and shone on us, it was incredibly beautiful. It was both moving and uplifting, said Jukku with a deep sigh from the top of Ukkusissat.
A dangerous route
We spoke with Jukku before he made the trip, and he told us that he had the idea to raise the flag at Ukkusissat in Nuuk in response to the events between Greenland and the United States.
The route can be compared to Greenland's difficult situation.
The slippery terrain can be dangerous if you are not careful.
They had expected to spend an hour and a half on the trip, but after almost two hours they reached the top of the 722-meter-high mountain. Along the way, they followed the events on the radio, each with their own headphones. When the meeting in the United States was over, their arrival took on a special meaning.
“When we stopped and started raising the flag, everything came together. It was incredibly calming,” says Jukku.
Urges others to do the same
Jukku Kielsen believes that it is time for us as a society to stand together when the United States tries to take over our country.
– Now is the time to stand together, not to divide.
Jukku believes that raising our flags on various mountains is not only an act, but also shows visitors where they are. That's why he encourages his compatriots.
– My Greenlandic compatriots, come and raise the flag on our mountains too. When visitors come, they should have no doubt about where they are, of course Greenland, says Jukku on the way down from Ukkusissat.
