Orla Joelsen wants to be in the Danish Parliament

Orla Joelsen is known for her opposition to the US's desire to take over Greenland.

Now she is entering politics as a candidate for the Danish Parliament election.

Orla Joelsen writes on Facebook that she has decided to run for the Danish Parliament election for Atassut.

Orla Joelsen has been a prominent voice on the social media X, where she has been very active in arguing against President Donald Trump's desire to take over Greenland.

On X, Orla Joelsen has built up a large following with just over 86,000 followers.

In 2025, Orla Joelsen was the organizer behind a large demonstration that took place in Nuuk on March 15 against the USA.

On Thursday at 1:30 p.m., Siumut has called a press conference.

At the press conference, the party will present Siumut's election program for the general election as well as all candidates running for Siumut.

The party has launched a number of candidates. These are Ane Lone Bagger, Najaaraq Møller, Ineqi Kielsen, Aka Hansen, Doris J. Jensen and Erika Nielsen Baadh.

On Friday afternoon, Inuit Ataqatigiit will reveal the party's election program and candidates for the Folketing.

This is stated by the party in a press release.

The presentation will take place at Hotel Nordbo at 2 pm on Friday in Nuuk.

Since 2015, Aaja Chemnitz has managed to be elected to the Folketing for IA, but she has decided not to run again.

Friday, it will be revealed who will try to carry on the legacy of Aaja Chemnitz, who at the last parliamentary election in 2022 received 4,296 votes, corresponding to 22 percent of all votes cast.

The parliamentary election will be held on March 24, and apart from IA, Naleraq and Demokraatit have not presented candidates either.

Doris J. Jensen confirms to Sermitsiaq that she is running for Parliament.

– Yes, I decided to run for the election last week, says Doris J. Jensen.

She is not new to the world of politics. She sat in the Parliament from 2011 to 2015. In addition, she has previously been a member of both Naalakkersuisut and Inatsisartut, but was not elected to Inatsisartut in the elections last year.

Today she sits on the municipal council of Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq, while Kim Kielsen is on leave from the municipal council.

Doris J. Jensen is a teacher at Atuarfik Hans Lynge for the oldest students, but she is sure that she has something to contribute if she is elected to the Folketing.

– While we are at the center of the world, it is important that there are people with knowledge and experience running for the election. I am pleased that there are also several new candidates running for Siumut. It is our hallmark at Siumut that we bring in both new and experienced candidates.

– The most important thing for me is that it has never been more important to defend our country, in a time when there is a lot of unrest in the world.

There are now a total of six candidates for the Folketinget from Siumut.

In connection with Aaja Chemnitz not running again for the parliamentary election, Inuit Ataqatigiit is holding a coffee mik for the politician on Thursday.

Candidate for the Danish Parliament election for Siumut, Aka Hansen, wants to work for greater legal security for Greenlandic parents in Denmark, she writes in a press release.

- Greenlandic parents experience being assessed and judged in a system that neither understands their linguistic nor cultural background, writes Aka Hansen and continues:

- When a system repeatedly produces decisions that are perceived as incomprehensible and unfair by those involved, then it is not the families who are at fault. It is the system.

In recent years, several cases of forced removal of children from Greenlandic parents in Denmark have created great public debate and protests against the situation.

Aka Hansen writes that legal certainty is a fundamental right, and that Greenlandic parents in Denmark should be met with “the same respect, the same professionalism and the same legal protection as all other citizens.”

Najaaraq Møller has been a member of Inatsisartut and has worked to promote the self-determination of Greenlanders in their own country and participated in debates.

She is now running for the Folketing. Siumut writes this in a press release.

- It has become more important than ever to defend the self-determination of the Greenlandic people in the Folketing, she says.

In the press release, Najaaraq Møller emphasizes the increasing interest in Greenland from the international community.

- Therefore, it has become extremely important that we Greenlanders protect our self-determination to a greater extent. At the same time, the time has come for us to cooperate with other countries to disseminate and promote our interests.

She is running for the Folketing to work for the Greenlandic population to have a better position than today.

Siumut is now presenting another candidate for the Folketing.

This concerns political deputy chairman of the party Ineqi Kielsen.

Ineqi Kielsen writes in a press release about his candidacy that he wants to be a clear voice in the Folketing:

- If Greenland is to move responsibly towards greater self-determination, it requires that we take responsibility in the institutions where power currently lies.

He believes that the debate about Greenland in Denmark is often simplified and reduced to a question of block grants. The reality is more complex, he writes:

- Greenland contributes to Denmark's geopolitical position. Greenland is central to NATO's Arctic strategy. Greenland gives Denmark a global relevance that far exceeds the country's size, says the politician.

Ineqi Kielsen also ran for the 2019 general election, where he received 805 votes.

The substitute for Aki-Matilda Høegh-Dam (N) in the last general election will not run again when the general election is scheduled for March 24.

Elvira Kûitse entered the Folketing in the fall of 2025, when Aki-Matilda Høegh-Dam took leave to attend to her political work in Inatsisartut. This made her the first East Greenlander in the Folketing.

Kûitse received 120 personal votes in the 2022 parliamentary election. Like Aki-Matilda Høegh-Dam, she ran for Siumut at the time, but later switched to Naleraq.

It is now certain that Greenland will have two new members of the Folketing.

On Thursday, Aaja Chemnitz (IA) announced that she would not run again, and on Thursday evening, party chairwoman in Naleraq Pele Broberg announced that Aki-Matilda Høegh-Dam would not run again either.

Aki-Matilda Høegh-Dam has previously announced that she would not run again for the Folketing, partly because she is now also a member of Inatsisartut, where she will use her strength.

In a video on TikTok from Thursday evening, Aki-Matilda Høegh-Dam explains more about her decision:

- Right now I am in Uummannaq, and you have probably heard that there are elections for the Folketing. I just want to say it so that everyone is on board:

- I have decided not to run for the Folketing. Therefore, I would like to thank everyone who has supported me. We have achieved a lot. I am absolutely certain that the next members will also do everything for their work, Aki-Matilda Høegh-Dam says in the video, among other things, and continues:

- The challenges in our country have not diminished, and that is why I will use my energy and time to focus on them. That is why I would also like to thank my colleagues in the Folketing, including Aaja. Even though we do not always agree, I would like to thank them for the good cooperation we have had.

Aki-Matilda Høegh-Dam ran for the 2022 parliamentary election for Siumut. She received a landslide election with a total of 6,670 votes, corresponding to 33 percent of all votes cast in the election.

In February 2025, leading up to the Inatsisartut election, she switched parties from Siumut to Naleraq.
