It is stressful and requires unnecessary effort for people in great need of help to have to deal with mutual accusations between the municipality and the Government of Greenland.

This is the statement from the Council for Human Rights, which makes a call to the Government of Greenland and the Municipality of Kujalleq in the two parties' disagreements about the handling of the area of children and disabilities in the municipality.

The Council believes that the two parties must focus on ensuring that citizens receive the necessary support and to strengthen cooperation to find solutions to the existing challenges.

Council: Conditions are serious

The Greenland Government suspended the municipality's management of the area back in 2024. Therefore, the Greenland Government is currently responsible for the administration and management. Municipal Director Randi Vestergaard Evaldsen has harshly criticized the way the Greenland Government runs the area, which according to the director has created insecurity and dissatisfaction among affected citizens in the municipality.

The Greenland Human Rights Council therefore calls on the authorities to find solutions, because according to the council, the conditions for people in vulnerable situations and people in need of physical and mental help in South Greenland are serious.

- Challenges are pointed out in relation to both financial frameworks and access to sufficiently qualified personnel, writes the Greenland Human Rights Council, which also acknowledges that improvements have been made in certain areas, including for foster families.

Discrimination should be avoided

The Human Rights Council therefore calls on the Municipality of Kujalleq and the Government of Greenland to focus on continued and strengthened cooperation to find solutions to the existing challenges.

- This should be done with a view to ensuring compliance with the minimum human rights obligations and a systematic and forward-looking strengthening of the effort, the council writes.

The Human Rights Council also calls on authorities to avoid discrimination and ensure real and equal access to necessary social support throughout Greenland.
