Siumut has decided to leave the coalition.
This is stated by the chairman of Naalakkersuisut, Jens-Frederik Nielsen (D):
- Siumut's representative has informed me today that Siumut will no longer be part of the coalition. It is their decision. I respect it. But I will also be honest and say that I am disappointed, he writes on Facebook.
Naalakkersuisut has also issued a statement stating that Naalakkersuisut's Minister for Foreign Affairs and Research, Vivian Motzfeldt, has resigned on March 13.
Vivian Motzfeldt has played a central role in tackling the diplomatic crisis with the US in recent months. She has met with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President J.D. Vance, together with Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen in Washington.
Chairman of the Greenlandic Parliament Jens-Frederik Nielsen writes on Facebook that he is upset that Siumut will no longer be part of the coalition at a time when Greenland is experiencing unprecedented pressure and attention from the outside world:
- Statements and signals from the US have made it clear that we are in the middle of a serious geopolitical situation. That is precisely why it has been important for me to gather as broad a coalition as possible.
- I am upset that Siumut no longer wants to be part of that community, writes Jens-Frederik Nielsen.
Siumut joined the coalition under Jens-Frederik Nielsen's leadership after the Inatsisartut election on 11 March 2025.
The election was a disaster for Siumut, which was more than halved compared to the 2021 election. The party only received 4 seats compared to 10 seats in 2021.
Shortly after the election, Erik Jensen resigned as party chairman. Vivian Motzfeldt became acting chairman, but she lost a contested election in June 2025 against Aleqa Hammond, who was able to retake the party chairmanship.
