This must happen now with the coalition and the members of the Greenland government.

Siumut has withdrawn from the coalition, and with Naaja H. Nathanielsen entering the Folketing, a total of four members of Naalakkersuisut have resigned. Jens-Frederik Nielsen states that the coalition agreement is to be renewed and that new members of Naalakkersuisut are to be appointed.

Jens-Frederik Nielsen will be busy leading up to the spring session of Inatsisartut, which starts on 14 April, as a number of things need to be put in place.

If you have been following political events, you probably know what has happened with the coalition and the members of Naalakkersuisut. With several developments along the way, we will take stock here from the beginning.

When Jens-Frederik Nielsen presented the new coalition and the Naalakkersuisut members on March 28 last year, a total of four parties participated, and Naalakkersuisut consisted of ten members.

OVERVIEW: HERE ARE THE RESIGNED

November 13, 2025:

Minister of Social Affairs, Labour Market, Internal Affairs and Environment, Bentiaraq Ottosen, is resigning.

December 9, 2025:

Naalakkersuisoq for children, youth and families Mads Pedersen is resigning.

March 13, 2026:

Siumut is withdrawing from the coalition, which means that Vivian Motzfeldt is withdrawing as Minister of Foreign Affairs and Research.

March 25, 2026:

Naalakkersuisoq for Business, Minerals, Energy, Justice and Equality, Naaja H. Nathanielsen, is resigning as she becomes a member of the Folketing.

Within less than a year, the coalition was reduced to three parties, and four members of Naalakkersuisut have since resigned. This was never Jens-Frederik Nielsen's intention, and he regrets the situation.

- Based on various circumstances, the first year could not have been different, but we will move forward and continue the work as planned, he says.

Goals and new members of Naalakkersuisut

With the coalition reduced from four to three parties and four missing members, the country's leader has no time to rest in the coming period.

Are you getting busy?

- Yes, since I became chairman of Naalakkersuisut, it has been normal to work 14-16 hours a day at times. The busyness is not unusual, it is part of the responsibility.

When Bentiaraq Ottosen from Atassut resigned, the party has proposed Maritha Broberg as his replacement. Inuit Ataqatigiit must find a replacement for Naaja H. Nathanielsen and Mads Pedersen, while Vivian Motzfeldt must also be replaced. Jens-Frederik Nielsen will not reveal the names of the replacements for the last members of the Naalakkersuisut who resigned, but one thing is certain.

When Inatsisartut meets for the spring session, they will approve the appointment of four new members of Naalakkersuisut. Since Kim Kielsen was elected as chairman of Inatsisartut, while Siumut participated in the coalition, a decision must also be made whether a new chairman should be elected.

- When the Inatsisartut convenes, we will appoint them at the first opportunity, he says.

It will also be necessary for the three parties in the coalition to draw up a new coalition agreement.

- When we appointed the Naalakkersuisut, our political agreement was the result of negotiations between the four parties. All parties got something out of it and reached some compromises.

- Now we are facing the next step: Should there be changes? Are the parties considering any considerations? Because now only three parties are cooperating, says Jens-Frederik Nielsen.

Two members of the Naalakkersuisut who are running in the general election have cast doubt on Atassut's continued participation in the coalition. They have also said that they will make a decision after the election.

After the chairman of Atassut, Aqqalu C. Jerimiassen, has been in dialogue with the chairman of Naalakkersuisut, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, they have decided to stay in the coalition.

- Of course, our primary goal is cooperation. We prefer to focus on what we can agree on rather than division, says Aqqalu C. Jerimiassen.
