The coming week marks the last opportunity to hand in soon-to-be-worthless banknotes, and this will very well create great pressure at the deposit points.
The deadline is Sunday, May 31, and in recent weeks there has been a lot of activity at the counters.
The busyness is expected to increase further, writes Nationalbank in a press release.
- The waiting time may be long, even though we are doing everything we can to deploy extra staff and provide guidance at the deposit points, says Niels Kaas, Chief Cashier at Nationalbank.
- With the pressure we have experienced leading up to the deadline, you should prepare well from home and bring the necessary forms and documents and arm yourself with patience.
The Nationalbank announced almost two and a half years ago that the 1000-krone banknotes and all types of banknotes from 1944, 1952, 1972 and 1997 would be phased out.
The banknotes have been invalid as a means of payment in shops since 31 May 2025. Before long, they will also be worthless in the eyes of the Nationalbank.
The Nationalbank has entered into a collaboration with the exchange agency Forex, which means that until 31 May 2026, you can hand in old banknotes and get new ones instead.
Nine days before the final deadline, Danmarks Nationalbank's three deposit locations in Aarhus, Odense and Copenhagen have received over 43,000 deposits and over 200 million kroner since they opened in December 2024.
A total of 21.1 billion kroner worth of banknotes have been deposited since 30 November 2023. But there are still a handful of billion kroner that have not been deposited.
