With only a few weeks until the competition starts on April 2-3, the organizing group behind the snowmobile event "Greenland Hill Climb Championship" had to pull the plug and cancel.
There wasn't enough snow in the gorge at Quassussuaq, where the event was supposed to take place.
Until the very end, the organizers had hoped that a decent pile of snow would fall, but that hadn't happened, and in the end it was about the safety of the riders, says spokesperson for the organizing group, Larseeraq Egede.
– There is not enough snow in the area at all. At the bottom there is a risk that the riders will hit rocks and they also have to go all the way to the top, where the wind removes the snow that is there. Even last year when there was a lot of snow, we had to spend a week moving around the snow and preparing the course, Larseeraq Egede told Sermitsiaq before Easter.
Inspiration from the USA
Last year was the first time that the Greenland HIll Climb Championship was held in Greenland, inspired by the American competition "Jackson Hole Snow Devils Hill Climb", which was started in 1975 in Wyoming, and which today brings together more than 300 of the best snowmobile riders from both Canada and the USA.
Last year's competition involved racing for the fastest time from the lake to the top of the mountain around the gates set up for both adults and children. This year, the plan was to expand the competition with an oldboys race and a women's class.
Enjoying great support
In terms of sponsorship, the organizers already had a good start last year with Greenland Boat Center/Orsiivik as the main sponsor with a contribution of 50,000 kroner.
In addition, they received contributions and sponsorships from Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq, GNC, HHE, ITTU.NET, Nuuk Transport, Bolt Lamar, Nuuk Handymand Aps, Arctic Auto and Detailing, Qiviut, Sarfalerisut and VVS, Bifrost Motors, Permagreen, Autonord, Greenland Office Supply, Arctic Star, Nuuk Rental, Nuna Advokater, Inuk Travel, Royal Arctic Line, Nuuk Marine Center, Wrap Sign Service, Raw Arctic and Qulutius Events.
– It is such a shame that we have to cancel this year. It is a completely new sport that enjoys great support from both sponsors, volunteers and the audience. We have gathered a good group of volunteers who are happy to take on responsibility and want to spend energy and effort on this, says Larseeraq Egede and adds:
– But we just have to come back strong next year.
