US President Donald Trump describes the two-week ceasefire with Iran as a victory.
This is happening in an interview with the AFP news agency after the parties agreed on a ceasefire on Wednesday night, which also means that Iran will reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
- Total and complete victory. 100 percent. No doubt about it, Donald Trump tells AFP.
Further negotiations are now planned between delegations from the US and Iran on the basis of an Iranian ten-point plan.
In a post on Trump's own social media, Truth Social, the president has described the Iranian ten-point plan as a useful starting point for negotiations.
According to Trump, Iran's enriched uranium will be "handled perfectly" in the agreement, but he does not give any details about what that entails.
- It will be handled perfectly, otherwise I would not have made a deal, says Trump.
When the US and Israel started the war in Iran on February 28, the justification was that Trump wanted to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons and missiles that could reach the United States.
Trump believes that there is a solid basis for a long-term agreement and mentions in this connection an agreement with 15 points. That is, five points more than the agreement that Iran has presented.
- We have 15 points, most of which have already been agreed. We will have to see what happens. We will have to see if we reach the goal, says Trump.
Prior to the ceasefire, the president had said that "an entire civilization will die tonight" unless his demands, including the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, were met.
The announcement came after Trump had threatened to destroy Iran's power plants and bridges.
Should upcoming negotiations with Iran prove to collapse, he will not rule out repeating the threats.
- You'll have to wait and see, says Trump.
In a post posted on Truth Social after the interview, he describes the ceasefire as a great day for world peace.
The president adds that the United States will help manage shipping traffic in the Strait of Hormuz.
- There will be a lot of positive steps! There will be a lot of money to be made. Iran can begin the reconstruction process. We're going to stock up on supplies of all kinds and just hang out to make sure everything goes well, Trump writes.
The US president is also asked in the interview with AFP whether he believes China played a role in getting Iran to sign a ceasefire.
- I hear that, Trump says.
Pakistan's Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif, who has played a role as a mediator, has invited the US and Iran to talks on a peace agreement in the Pakistani capital, Islamabad, on Friday.
