There will be laid ten percent duty on goods from Denmark and several other European countries from 1 February due to the situation around Greenland.
This is what the President of the United States, Donald Trump, writes on his social media, Truth Social, on Saturday.
The other countries are Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, Great Britain, the Netherlands and Finland.
From June 1, 2026, the tariff will be increased to 25 percent, writes Trump.
The tariff will be in effect until an agreement is reached on American "acquisition" of Greenland, writes Trump.
- The US has been trying to complete this trade for over 150 years. Many presidents have tried - and with good reason - but Denmark has always refused, writes the president.
Trump repeats claims that Greenland is threatened by China and Russia, who "want" the island.
- World peace is at stake, writes the American president.
A number of goods from EU countries are already subject to US tariffs. In July 2025, the EU and the US entered into an agreement which established a general tariff ceiling of 15 percent for most goods from the EU to the US.
The American president does not elaborate on the consequences of the just-announced tariffs for existing agreements.
The message from Trump comes at the same time as there are demonstrations on Saturday in both Denmark and Greenland against the USA and Donald Trump's desire to gain control of Greenland.
During the week, Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen (Moderates) and Naalakkersuisoq for foreign affairs, Vivian Motzfeldt (S), have been in Washington D.C. to meet with the Vice President and Secretary of State of the United States.
