Grief turned to strength at Ama Dablam

Niclas V. Sørensen has climbed Ama Dablam, one of the world's most impressive mountains, but also one of the most technically demanding and exposed. Climbers must constantly navigate between crevasses, avalanches, rock and ice slides, while fighting against extreme cold and altitude sickness.

- The joy was overwhelming. The view was crystal clear, and around us rose several of the world's highest mountains. In that moment everything else disappeared. Fear, fatigue, pain. There was only clarity, says Niclas V. Sørensen about the moment when he reached the top of Ama Dablam, to AG.

For him the road towards Ama Dablam began after he lost friends - people who were close to him.

- Sorrow settled not only in the heart, but throughout the body. It left me in a place where I could either stand or move on. I chose the latter. The mountain was not an escape, but a new one beginning. A place where I could pick myself up, regain direction and create meaning in something that had been meaningless, he says.

For Niclas, the road towards Ama Dablam began after he lost friends - people who were close to him.

With its 6,812 meters above sea level, Ama Dablam is known as one of the Himalayas' most technically demanding mountains with climbing in both ice, snow and rock.

- Situations arise where you have to trust on a footing that is barely wider than a centimeter. A rope, that's it only security. Here I learned what trust really means - not just to the equipment and the surroundings, but to myself. There are no shortcuts on the mountain. Only consequences, says Niclas V. Sørensen.

His journey does not stop here. He already has one second vision ready. Namely to put Greenland on the world map within mountain climbing and ultimately stand on top of K2, as the first Greenlandic person.

K2 is the world's second highest mountain – only Mount Everest is higher, but is considered more difficult and dangerous than Mount Everest.

- The plan is of course variable. The mountains always decides the last word. But the objective is clear and Ama Dablam was one decisive step on the way, he says.
