Nyborghallerne laid the groundwork for the last training session of the year for the Greenlandic handball players living in Denmark.
In 2025 there have been collections in Vissenbjerg, in Fredericia, in GOG in Gudme and then on Saturday in Nyborg. The collections began last year.
24 boys and girls had come to Nyborg and the three coaches Kathrine Mikkelsen, Bent Møller and Rasmus Larsen were again in charge of the training. As always, there were satisfied parents in the stands. The last item on the agenda was a boys' training match against a good team from EVN Efterskolen at Nyborg. In such a training match, the result is of no great importance.
However, the Greenlandic boys managed to win after initial problems. The after-school team is coached by former national team and GOG player Keld Vilhelmsen. For the Greenlandic boys, Nyborghallerne was a kind of home ground this Saturday with Greenlandic music during the warm-up.
Big dreams
Many of the girls and boys dream big dreams. They want something from their sport, and ensure that training is as optimal as possible. And there is great satisfaction that TAAK Timersoqatigiiffiit Assamik Arsartartut Katuffiat organizes the sessions.
We spoke with 15-year-old Maja Spaanhede and 18-year-old Lars Jeremiassen.
Maja was born in Ilulissat. Moved to Nuuk when she was eight, and to Denmark in 2022. Plays in TIK Vallensbæk on the U15 team in the best league on Zealand. Maja is really happy for her club and for her coach.
- I do normal handball training three times a week. Morning training one day a week and of course I do strength training, says Maja, who also finds time to play football between handball training.
The training sessions with the other Greenlandic players are something very special.
- It's so perfect to see other Greenlanders, speak Greenlandic and play against and with someone I know from Greenland.
18-year-old Lars Jeremiassen is from Nuuk. Born in Qaqortoq. In Nuuk, Lars represented GSS. Lars has been at the sports college in Ikast since August, and plays for the club Ikast FS on the U19 team in the 1st Division. This is the first time that Lars has participated in the talent training.
- It's great to be here, Lars begins our conversation.
- I train quite a bit in Ikast. Three times club training a week. Twice at school and then of course strength training.
Lars thinks that there is quite a difference between the training in Ikast and the way you train in GSS.
- It's tougher in Denmark. More physical and many tough duels, where you need a lot of strength to cope. In GSS we trained a lot more systems.
Lars hopes that he will be so good that there are clubs that could be interested in getting him on their team.
- I dream of becoming a professional handball player, and would very much like to play outside Denmark. At first, maybe the Faroe Islands, Lars ends our little conversation.
There are four Greenlandic students at the Ikast Sports College. All four participated in Nyborg.
The project continues
There will also be training sessions in 2026 for the Greenlandic handball talents who are in Denmark for one reason or another.
