Ukaleq Slettemark delivered a performance that will be remembered.
With impressive composure and sharpness, she truly cleaned sheet in her age group, securing medals in all disciplines.
On top of that came two Greenland Championship titles – a result that cements her position as one of Greenland's absolute strongest profiles in the track.
But for Ukaleq herself, it wasn't the metal that shone brightest.
After a season characterised by international competitions and great experiences – including the Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina – it was something else that filled me the most: the feeling of being home.
– It’s nice to be home. Even though I’ve lived in Norway for many years now, there’s something really special about competing in the Greenland Championships. It really feels like home here, she says with warmth in her voice.
And home wasn’t just geographical. Ukaleq competed for NSP, the club where it all began. This is where the foundation was laid, and here the passion for both cross-country skiing and biathlon grew.
– NSP has shaped me. This is where I trained as a child, and where my interest in the sport was created. Coming back, competing for the club, cheering on the kids and giving something back – it really means a lot to me, she says.
During the championships, it was clear that her presence went beyond the results. She was not only a competitor, but also a role model. An athlete that the younger runners could look up to – and a reminder of how far you can go with talent, determination and roots firmly planted in Greenlandic snow.
Now a short break from the structured elite routine awaits. April is a month of recovery and presence, before training intensifies again and she will have to return to training in Norway in May.
But the break will be far from passive.
– I want to use the time here in Greenland. Go cross-country skiing, stay in a cabin and be with friends and family. Recharge – both physically and mentally, says the ever-smiling skier.
For Ukaleq Slettemark, Greenland is not just a place she returns to. That is the foundation of her career. And in Nuuk it became clear once again: When she is at home, she is not just a participant – she is in her element.
