Now it will be easier for Enos and others to get their own fishing boat: – I would like to try next year

Enos Kristiansen fished cod from someone else's dinghy last year. But he has no doubt that he could get a bigger yield with his own boat.

Enos Kristiansen has already noticed Naalakkersuisut's announcement on Tuesday, May 12, on their website.

Here it was announced that the subsidy scheme for fishing boats for fishermen in East Greenland and Qaanaaq will be improved from June 1.

– This will be a great advantage for people in Tasiilaq and for fishermen, says Enos Kristiansen.

So far, fishermen in East Greenland and Qaanaaq have been able to get up to 40 percent in subsidies for fishing boats. At the same time, it has been a requirement that they be able to finance 10 percent themselves.

From June 1, the subsidy will be increased to up to 85 percent, while the requirement for self-financing will be lowered to just two percent.

Enos Kristiansen and his fishing buddies fish here with handlines. But according to Enos, the work would be easier with automatic tailings.

The dream of owning your own fishing boat is getting closer

23-year-old Enos Kristiansen from Tasiilaq currently works as a craftsman. But when the cod return in August, the plan is for him to go fishing again.

When Sermitsiaq visited Tasiilaq last year, we followed Enos and his fishing buddies out to sea. Here he told us that cod fishing was a good income.

Enos and his girlfriend have one child, and with his own boat he will have better opportunities to support his family.

“I imagine I will try to apply for a boat next year,” says Enos.

He also believes that it can be more profitable to fish alone if you have your own boat.

“The fishermen here often prefer to fish alone because of the income. I also believe that many will take advantage of the new opportunity to invest in new equipment, he says.

Enos says that when the cod disappear from the area around Tasiilaq, they try to fish for halibut at Sermiligaaq and Kuummiut before the sea freezes. Here he is cleaning cod.

Self-financing of 7,000 kroner

With the change to the subsidy scheme, the requirement for self-financing has been lowered to two percent. This means that a boat with an engine and equipment for a total price of 350,000 kroner only requires a personal payment of 7,000 kroner.

If you receive a fishing subsidy of 297,500 kroner, the rest can be financed through installments. This makes the scheme more attractive, says Enos Kristiansen.

– It has become more tempting, he says.

He has already started to consider which boat he would like to have.

– A Poca 770 could be an option.

But a smaller model could also be considered.

– Poca 600 is also attractive, says Enos Kristiansen.
