Siiva Fleischer publishes a song: - We are very concerned about the US's pressure on our country

Wednesday 14 January in the afternoon, while many Greenlanders were anxiously waiting, Siiva Fleischer welcomes us to her home.

Foreign Minister Vivian Motzfeldt, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen, US Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio are about to meet in Washington.

It is an ordinary weekday, when most people are at work, but Siiva Fleischer has taken this day off.

- Today I'm taking the day off, says Siiva, as he sits down in front of the TV and continues to follow the events.

Siiva Fleischer has just released the song "Kalaallit Nunaat – Kalaallit pigaat" (Greenland is Greenlanders ed.) together with other musicians. This is one of the reasons why he has taken time off. He is contacted by journalists, but will also follow the events closely. Already from the song's title it is clear what it is about.

Order with requirements

Greenland's pressure from the USA increased last year, and in the spring Siiva was contacted by musicians to write a song text. Glenn Møller and Steffen Lynge had composed the melody and came to his house to present their idea.

- I opened the door for them and they smiled as if they had found something, says Siiva with a smile, although he is still a little nervous.

They demanded that the lyrics “Kalaallit Nunaat - Kalaallit pigaat” should be part of the song.

- While the threats of attack or purchase of our country have persisted, it has never been more important that we stand together. Therefore... Wait a minute, what's happening?, Siiva suddenly stops when he sees on TV that the meeting in Washington is over and the participants are coming out.

Vivian Motzfeldt and Lars Løkke Rasmussen step down after meeting J.D. Vance and Marco Rubio. Siiva clings to his chair and follows every moment. He can't help but laugh as the two light a cigarette and seem to be having a good time.

- They smile. They smoke, he says with a relieved laugh, but immediately turns serious again.

- It is exciting what they will say, he adds, while his gaze still follows the screen.

Worries about the future

Although the meeting is over, it is clear that he is affected by the gravity of the situation as he begins to talk about it.

- Many people are afraid. And it is very thought provoking. Can it really be like that? Can America really, with so much power, do that to us? says Siiva.

Part of his concern is that our welfare may be threatened.

- I am very worried that if America takes us over, we will only be able to afford education, training and much else, such as health, if we have a lot of money ourselves, says Siiva.

Siiva Fleischer is now 66 years old. When he thinks about the situation, he is filled with worries.

- I'm getting older, and if our world changes in some way, how will I have access to health care? says Siiva.

The poem

After the meeting, the next thing is to wait for the press conference. In the meantime, space has been left for Siiva to discuss his poem.

Siiva started writing songs when he was about 15 years old and has been doing so for over 50 years. He has worked with many classics and now compares his poem with his previous works.

- It is different, and it is not different. I also write poems about such problems. For me it was very appropriate to write this text, says Siiva.

He says that it was a big task to adapt the poem to the already existing melody, but after about a month it was finished. However, he was never in doubt about the song's content.

- When I thought about how people in our country feel, the poems started to appear.

- I reminded myself of the strength of our ancestors, so I also wanted to show that we have strength, says Siiva.

Although he seems more relaxed since we entered his home, it does not mean that the situation surrounding our country is over. He hopes that through his poems he can contribute to turning the country's situation around for the better.

- I hope it can help us stand together, concludes Siiva Fleischer.
