Queen Margrethe has undergone balloon dilation of the coronary artery of her heart after she was admitted to hospital on Thursday with a heart attack.

The royal house wrote in a press release on Friday, which states that the queen is "well".

She will remain at Rigshospitalet, where she is admitted, "for a few more days". It has not been specified how many days the queen is expected to be admitted.

A balloon dilation removes a narrowing or a blood clot in the coronary artery, so that the blood supply to the heart is improved.

Admitted on Thursday

On Thursday afternoon, she was admitted to Rigshospitalet due to a heart attack. It was said that the 86-year-old queen was tired but in good spirits.

Heart attacks are mainly caused by calcification in the coronary arteries of the heart, which means that not enough oxygen is supplied to the heart. The risk of heart attacks increases with age.

Head of Research at the Danish Heart Association Gunnar Gislason says that balloon dilation "is not a worrying procedure at all".

- You notice an immediate improvement, and afterwards you are almost symptom-free.

- It is important to say that this is a chronic disease, so it can come back. You should of course be aware if symptoms such as chest pain or heart attacks occur, he says.

Abdicated after 52 years

Queen Margrethe has been hospitalized at Rigshospitalet several times in recent years.

It was also a major back operation in February 2023 that had given her reason to consider her role as regent.

She made this clear to TV viewers in her New Year's speech that same year, when she announced that she would abdicate and hand over the throne to her eldest son.

On January 14, 2024 - 52 years after the Queen's own accession to the throne - Frederik took over as king.

The Queen was last hospitalized in May 2025. At that time, she was admitted for observation due to a cold.

This was done "as a precaution", the royal house said at the time. She was discharged after a few days.
